As a neonatal neurologist, I specialize in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions affecting the newborn brain. At Duke, we have many options, including clinical trials, advanced medications, and surgical options, that we can offer patients to get them to a better quality of life with fewer or no seizures. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do. When people think about sleep disorders, they usually report getting too much or not enough sleep. That is the starting point where we work together to get to the root cause. What I have discovered in treating patients is that sleep medicine is multifactorial - you address attitudes around sleep, mental health, wellness, as well as consider other medical problems. Sleep apnea is one of the better-known sleep disorders, and the good news is that we have better technology today to treat it. It is very gratifying when patients come back and tell me how much their quality of life has improved! When I talk to patients, other less recognized sleep disorders can also be discovered and treated, such as restless leg syndrome, abnormal sleep behaviors, and narcolepsy. It is not uncommon for more than one sleep disorder to be present. When I see a patient, my aim is to to get a complete picture about their sleep so success in treatment is achieved. I am a clinical geneticist and a pediatrician with a deep interest in undiagnosed and rare genetic disorders.
